East Surry and Surry Central shone bright in the holiday JV basketball tournament at North Surry.
Both the Cardinals and Golden Eagles won their two games by double figures as the Greyhounds hosted four games on Thursday and five on Friday.
This was the second of what organizers hope will be an annual JV Christmas Classic.
Holiday tournaments – like the two-day event at East Surry – are great for the varsity teams, but the junior varsity squads end up with a long wait between scheduled games, noted T.C. Gammons.
Games like this provide a chance for kids to clean off the rust and continue to improve as young players.
In the first game Thursday, Surry Central beat North Wilkes 43-28. Then came two close matches.
Mount Tabor edged Starmount 52-49, and the host Greyhounds lost a one-point nailbiter to Lexington.
East Surry capped the first day with a 41-23 win.
For the second day, East Wilkes and South Stokes joined in and played each other in the last game. The Cardinals beat the Sauras 44-39.
To start the day, the Golden Eagles beat Lexington 72-57, making it back-to-back 15-point wins.
Then Parkland beat Starmount 44-39.
East Surry jumped on North Wilkes for a 61-12 drubbing. Mount Tabor topped North Surry 65-44.
“I want to thank our sponsors for making this year’s event possible,” said Gammons.
