Surry Central soccer came out blazing against North Surry Monday, knocking in a goal within the first three minutes and never looking back, defeating the Greyhounds 6-0.
Central lead 4-0 at the half, and to North’s dismay, picked up two quick goals in the final minutes to bump up the margin.
Margarita Cortez scored the Golden Eagles first goal of the match, outrunning Greyhound defenders and putting the ball in the net, cutting a somersault and celebrating with her teammates in a cloud of dust.
Several of Central’s first half goals came as a result of North Surry penalties.
North Surry coach Adam Beshears said goals which come from unnecessary penalties hurt the Greyhounds chances early.
“That cost us,” Beshears said. “Their first goal was good, we played them hard and had shots on goal. They are a pretty decent team but they are a little more experienced than we are.”
Surry Central coach Blake Roth could not be reached for comment following the game as a Central player was taken to the hospital with an ankle injury.
Despite the loss, Beshears said he was happy with the Greyhounds’ effort.
“I was pleased with how we played,” he said. “That is probably one of the best games we’ve played, with intensity and pushing forward to where we actually had planned shots on the goal.
“Our goal is to try to concentrate on controlling part of the game,” Beshears continued. “We started out with defense, now we are trying to push forward where we can have some opportunities to score.”
Wednesday, North Surry will travel to South Stokes while Surry Central will host Galax.
