In a tune up for next weeks start to the conference golf season, Mount Airy bested North Surry and Ashe County at Mount Airy Country Club.
North Surry’s Justin Young and Ashe County’s Trey Scott led all scorers, shooting 36 each, while Mount Airy’s Chris Peavy was hot on their heels with a 37.
North Surry had a less than stellar showing after taking first at another warm up match last Thursday against Forbush, East Wilkes and Mount Airy.
First-year Greyhound coach Chuck Hiatt said when it comes to golf, sometimes when things go bad — things go bad.
“It’s just one of those off days,” Hiatt said. “We had a real off day and didn’t play that well. Golf is one of those things where an off day can really do you in. It was a good practice round for us just to get ready for the conference matches.”
Ashe County finished second behind the Bears, with North Surry taking home third.
The Greyhounds will start their conference season Thursday at Beaver Creek with host Surry Central.
Hiatt said he thinks Young, just a sophomore, will show himself to be one of the better golfers in the area once the season progresses.
“I think we are going to do really well,” Hiatt said. “I think we are really young, we only have one senior and the rest are sophomores and freshmen, so we have a really good looking team to build on. But I don’t want to take anything away from Mount Airy or Ashe, they deserved to win.”
