PILOT MOUNTAIN — The Mount Airy Lady Bear varsity girls lost to the North Wilkes Viking girls at the 2012 Communication for Education Holiday Classic at Pilot Mountain Middle School on Friday.
The final score ended with the Lady Vikings finishing 67-55 over the Lady Bears.
The Lady Vikings got off to an early lead against the Lady Bears and were ahead 18-11 at the end of the first quarter. At halftime, the score was 34-32 with the Bears ahead by two, and the Bears scored 23 points during the second quarter compared to the Vikings’ 14-point total.
Lady Bears Head Coach Howard Mayo said, “In the second quarter, we were playing like we want to play all the time.”
He said the team attacked the basket, and forced turnovers. Mayo said the Lady Bears forced five turnovers in the second quarter.
The Lady Bears lost their lead in the third but ended the third quarter still within one point of the Vikings, who led at 46-45.
Mayo said about Friday’s loss, “We have some things we still have to improve defensively on.”
The points scored Friday for the Lady Bears were: Davi Barbour 21; Alex Atkins 10; Mikayla Sievers 10; Symone Simmons, 5; Jasmine Varney, 5; Halee Ratcliff, 3; and Skyler Flippen scored 1.
The high scorers for the Lady Vikings on Friday were: Jackie Denny 29; Allie Church 15; Alley Shumate 11; and Taylor Wyatt scored 6 points.
