DOBSON — The Surry County Sheriff’s Office interdiction team Tuesday stopped a Virginia vehicle and found a quantity of methamphetamine and cash, arresting the driver on drug trafficking charges.

Sheriff Graham Atkinson said the team was working near the N.C. 89 and Interstate 77 interchange when it stopped a vehicle coming into the state. The team’s K-9 indicated the presence of a controlled substance in the vehicle and the team searched the car.

“They located $15,000 cash in the back floorboard and a trafficking amount of methamphetamine throughout the vehicle,” he said.

Methamphetamine smoking devices were also located in the car.

The driver, Marian Johnson Murphy, 65, of Salem, Va., was arrested on two counts of trafficking of methamphetamine and a felony charge of maintaining a drug vehicle. She was jailed with a $100,000 bond.

Both the cash and the vehicle were seized as well.

“Based on what was found in the car, the investigation is continuing,” Atkinson said. “There may be additional charges as a result of this traffic stop.”
