COLUMBIA, S.C. — Tyler Hull, a native of Mount Airy and former punter for the Mount Airy Bears who graduated in 2010, received an announcement from Steve Spurrier at the University of South Carolina only four days ago that he would receive a full scholarship after walking on as a “red-shirt” sophomore and punter for the Gamecocks.

Hull said he has averaged 40.1 yards punting this season for the university, so far. The Gamecocks’ record is 12-2.

“They were looking for a punter and I came in and got the starting job,” Hull said.

Hull is the first punter in 14 years to receive a scholarship as a sophomore punter at the college, he said.
