Christy Wagoner had a terrific game in North Surry’s 3-1 win over East Wilkes Wednesday. The problem with having a game like she did is, most of what she did does not show up in the score book.

Wagoner laid down a pretty pair of sacrifice bunts, each of which set up a run.

“Her execution was phenomenal,” North Surry coach Julie Gammons said. “She showed what she can do.”

Wagoner balanced her offensive output with superb defensive play. In the second inning, she made a sliding catch of a line drive. In the next inning, another lined shot looked like it was going to go over her head, but Wagoner backpedaled and reach upwards as high as she could to make the play, saving what surely would have been an extra-base hit.

Summer Robertson was the main beneficiary of Wagoner’s bunts, as she drove in two runs for the Greyhounds and Brooke Graves pitched her way out of a late-inning jam to preserve the victory. The Cardinals had two runners on with one out in the top of the seventh, but Graves, who has pitched every inning this season, got one batter to pop out to Kara Hodges before striking out the next East Wilkes batter to end the game.

“It was a very tense situation in the seventh inning and she did great,” Gammons said.

The Cardinals were able to keep the ball in play and avoid a lot of strikeouts, but the Greyhounds were able to make the plays.

The Greyhounds scored twice in the third and once more in the sixth.

North Surry improves to 4-1 overall after the non-conference victory. With wins over Mount Airy, South Stokes, North Stokes and now East Wilkes, Gammons likes what she has in her team.

“I just love this group,” she said. “They are skilled, they love the game, they love each other and they make it exciting. Even in the loss at Wilkes Central, we had nine runners on, so it was just missed opportunities.”

The Greyhounds travel to Ashe County Friday with the junior varsity beginning at 4:30 p.m.
