DOBSON — A public hearing is set Monday night that could yield nearly 150 jobs and a hearty new tax source in the county, according to Todd Tucker, president of the Surry County Economic Development Partnership.

During its meeting, set to begin at 6 p.m. in the Commissioner’s Meeting Room at the Surry County Government Center, the county Board of Commissioners is scheduled to hold a public hearing on an incentive package for an as-yet-unnamed business seeking to move into the county.

While officials are playing their cards close to their chest, Tucker said the Partnership is in talks with the business.

“We’re working with a company that is looking to buy a building in the Mount Airy area and open a business that could employ up to 140 people over the next several years,” he said.

Tucker said the business will be a manufacturing business that he described as an “out-of-state manufacturer with several operations throughout the United States.”

“We’ll be able to tell more after this hearing and the incentive package is approved,” he said. “Once that happens, we’ll be able to talk more about it.”

The hearing, scheduled to begin shortly after 6 p.m., is on the incentive package being considered.

Tucker said the package is a typical incentive offer related to the amount of money being invested and the potential tax revenue generated.

“Right now we’re looking at the county investing $543,448 over an eight-year period,” Tucker said.

If everything goes as planned, Tucker said more information will be forthcoming over the next several weeks.

“Hopefully, we’ll have some really good news to share with the public sometime in December,” he said.

Other than the public hearing, Commissioners are facing a light agenda, with an update on general county business being presented by County Manager Chris Knopf.

Following Knopf’s presentation, the board is expected to offer several special recognitions prior to adjourning the meeting.
