DOBSON — A court date has been set for a Mount Airy man involved in the Sept. 23 traffic accident that killed a local teen.
Charles Henry Murray III will face a judge in Criminal District County in Surry County on Dec. 3 after charges were filed by North Carolina Highway Patrolman J.M. Atkins. Murray was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle on Oct. 18.
Dakota Pittman, 18, died as a result of injuries in the accident on Old Creed Road on Sept. 23. According to Atkins, Pittman was traveling east on Old Creed Road at 10:41 a.m. when a Hyundai driven by Murray that was traveling west and slowed to turn off of Old Creed Road on to Holyfield Drive on the left side of the highway.
Atkins indicated that Murray did not see Pittman and turned in front of him. Pittman laid the motorcycle down and slid into the right side of the Hyundai. Pittman was wearing his helmet at the time of the crash.
Pittman was treated at the scene and airlifted by AirCare to Northern Hospital of Surry County and then to Wake Forest Baptist Health in Winston-Salem, where he later died.
Kendra Williams, 26, of Mount Airy, a passenger in the Hyundai, was in the passenger seat of the vehicle at the time of the collision. She was transported to Northern Hospital and then to Baptist for treatment of her injuries.
Murray refused treatment at the scene and was not injured.
Pittman was a competitive motocross racer and played basketball with the Surry Runnin’ Patriots homeschool basketball team.
