KERNERSVILLE — The Lady Bears’ Cinderella run in the volleyball playoffs is over after a loss at Bishop McGuinness Thursday.

Mount Airy made the playoffs despite a 9-17 record. Then the Bears showed they belonged by not just winning, but whipping their first two opponents.

They beat Central Academy by an average of five points per set, then against the 16-2 Community School of Davidson, the Bears won by an average of six points per set.

Coach Kim Lyons said after those matches that this shows just how tough the Northwest Conference is. A team like the Bears can go 5-11 in conference play, yet still be a very good team.

Unfortunately for Lyons and the Bears, they faced off against another Northwest team in the Lady Villains.

The teams split their two matches during the season, but Bishop won all three sets Thursday to advance in the state 1A playoffs.

Bishop (14-15) next will face Lake Norman Charter (23-3), fresh off a 3-1 win over East Surry.
