KERNERSVILLE — Mount Airy’s Kirsten Parries broke her own cross country record to win the Northwest Conference meet Thursday.

Parries won the state title last year in less than 20 minutes. She ran the 5K in 19:33, 10 seconds ahead of the competition.

She also had a personal best (and Northwest record) of 19:27 in conference meets last year. However, she smashed that with a time of 18:56, 31 seconds faster than the old mark.

Carly Kreber, Bishop McGuinness, was second at 19:34, right on Parries’ time from the state last year, but 38 seconds behind her today.

Parries was the only local runner to crack the top 20 in a girls event dominated by Bishop.

The Villains also won on the boys’ side, but by a closer margin over North Stokes and West Stokes.

Bishop’s Sam Williams beat West Stokes’ Jason Barber by nine seconds for the boys’ title.

Parries had a goal of trying to break the 19-minute barrier this season and reached that Thursday, said Coach Andrew Howard.

In order to push herself toward that goal, Parries has been running with Howard and the Bears’ top male performer, Joseph Dixon, who finished the race in 18:40.

She is really good at pushing herself, too, the coach noted.

Because some girls were out Thursday, Howard said the Bears didn’t have enough to field a girls team.

However, those who did run all produced personal bests, both in the girls and boys races.

As a coach, Howard said he couldn’t be more proud to see everyone trying so hard.

The Bear boys finished fourth, while North Surry was sixth. Surry Central didn’t field a boys team.

The Lady Eagles finished fourth, while the Lady Greyhounds were fifth.

East Surry did not participate in the event.
