East Surry used a big start Tuesday to cruise past Northwest 1-A conference foe East Wilkes 12-2 in six innings.

East Surry got on the board early and often, with a big first-inning hit by Jason Murphy jumping things off and giving his team 3-0 first inning lead.

The hitting trend continued, with East putting up six runs in the second inning to take a 9-0 lead.

East Surry coach Barry Hall was happy with the win but felt his team still had some work to do.

“Our pitching and defense was rusty tonight,” Hall said. “We got up early, but in the later stages of the game we got a little compulsive and that’s something we have to work on.”

East Surry picked up good performances from Walt Tuttle (2-4, 3 RBI), Spence Tuttle (2-3, 2 RBI), and Jason Murphy (2-3, 2 RBI).

With the win, East Surry improves to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the Northwest 1-A conference. The Cardinals will host county rival Surry Central today, with the Jayvee’s beginning at 4 p.m.

Surry Central falls to West Stokes

Surry Central put up a valiant effort Tuesday, but fell short to a strong West Stokes team 4-2 in King.

West Stokes got on the board early, scoring two runs in the first.

Surry Central didn’t back down however, scoring one of their own, cutting the defict to 2-1.

Following the first-inning fireworks, West Stokes starting pitcher Scott Leonard settled down and shut out the Golden Eagles nearly the rest of the way until the the seventh, with the Golden Eagles picking up one more run.

Surry Central coach Matt Scott had nothing but high praise for Leonard and West Stokes, saying he would put the Wildcats among the best in the 2-A classification.

“Leonard is really good and he threw it well for them tonight,” Scott said. “If that team isn’t a top-five team in the state, then I would hate to see who is.”

Surry Central had its chances but couldn’t capitalize, leaving 11 players on base and stalling out with a man on third in five innings without a score.

“We played well tonight, we didn’t hit the ball as hard as them but still had nine hits, the opportunity was there but we couldn’t capitalize,” Scott said. “I felt like all four of their runs came because of us not executing. They are a good team, but we helped them out some tonight.”

Surry Central’s Shane Johnson (3-4, 1 run), and Tanner Hudson (2-4) had good games in the losing effort.

With the loss the Golden Eagles fall to 2-1 overall.

Surry Central doesn’t have time to feel sorry for themselves, as they travel to East Surry today to take on the undefeated Cardinals.
