Mount Airy has five players still alive in the 1A tennis tournament, while East Surry has three left.

The Lady Bears have both doubles teams in the semifinals, while top seed Jordan Jackson advanced to the singles semis.

East Surry’s Haley Manuel battled through a tough singles match to reach the semifinals, while its top doubles pair needed three sets to advance.

The singles brackets included two play-in matches before the quarterfinals. Mount Airy’s Bree Hughes beat South Stokes’ number one, Gina Rutledge, 6-0, 6-2. North Stokes’ Hannah Mabe swept South Stokes’ Tori Everly 6-0, 6-0.

In the quarterfinals, Hughes then had to face Bishop McGuinness’ top player, Kyndall Cortes. Hughes made a good showing, but Cortes won 6-3, 6-4.

Jackson looked relaxed in her 6-0, 6-0 win over Mabe. She will face Bishop’s Morgan Auger, who defeated East Surry’s Brooke Tickle 6-1, 6-1.

Cortes will take on Manuel, who needed a 7-4 tiebreaker in the first set to defeat North Stokes’ Miranda Hammonds 7-6 (4), 6-4.

The top three players from Jackson, Cortes, Manuel and Auger qualify for the regional tournament next week.

In doubles play, East Surry’s Allie Hawks and Hannah Haynes fell in the play-in game to Jenny Glidewell and Taylor Evans, South Stokes, 6-4, 6-4.

North Stokes’ Brittany Foley and Emily Myers won 6-2, 6-0 over South Stokes’ Julie Linville and Kristen Denny.

Foley and Myers then took on the top-seeded Bears’ duo of Davi Barbour and Haley Thomas. The Bears swept through 6-0, 6-0 to reach the semifinals.

They will face East Surry’s top doubles team of Lauren Thompson and Tiffany King.

The Lady Cardinals won in three sets 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 over Bishop’s Adaire Hudson and Megan McDowell.

Mount Airy’s Jade Hughes and Elizabeth Dinkins easily knocked off Glidewell and Evans 6-1, 6-1.

They will face North Stokes’ Rebecca Gunter and Mallie Ziglar, who won 7-6 (5), 6-1 over Bishop’s Anna Petrangeli and Anna Owens.

The Northwest 1A Conference Tournament continues at 4 p.m. today at Mount Airy High School. The semifinals will be followed by the finals and the third-place matches.
