North Surry’s Sarah Glasco is back in the singles final, while Surry Central has both doubles teams facing off today.
Central’s Kennedy Dockery and Mikayla Cox were seeded fourth despite finishing second last year. They won both matches Tuesday, including what on paper was a big upset, topping West Stokes’ top-seeded team in straight sets.
They will face teammates Savannah Wilson and Megan Gillespie, who had a first-round bye and won their only match in straight sets.
Their spots in the final qualify both pairs for the regional tournament next week.
The third and final spot to qualify for regionals will be decided when North Surry’s Chainey Kuykendall and Chantel Davis take on West Stokes’ McKayla Newsome and Abbey Westmoreland.
Kuykendall and Davis advanced to the semifinals by beating West Stokes’ other doubles team of Mariah Maynard and Erin Kye.
The Lady Greyhounds tore through the first set 6-0 before the Lady Wildcats came back to take the second set 6-3. Then the Hounds clinched the match 6-2 in the third.
At the same time, Dockery and Cox were breezing through the first round, beating North’s Lakin East and Jazzmyn Pugh 6-1, 6-1.
In the semifinals, Dockery and Cox defeated West Stokes’ Newsome and Westmoreland 6-3, 6-2. Wilson and Gillespie beat Kuykendall and Davis 6-1, 6-3 on the other side of the bracket.
In singles play, sixth seed Abby Samuels, Surry Central, gave third seed Harriette Blackburn, North Surry, all she could handle in the quarterfinals.
Samuels was up 3-2 in the first set before Blackburn came back to take a 6-4 set. Then Samuels came back to take the second 6-4.
In the third set, Samuels was up 2-1 before Blackburn came from behind again for a 7-5 win.
Central’s Marlee Wilmoth also had to come from behind to beat a lower seed. Wilmoth, seeded fourth, came back from an early deficit to win 6-4, 7-5 over fifth seed Abbey Emerson, West Stokes.
North’s Sarah Glasco and West Stokes’ Leah Shelton got first-round byes and were fresh against Wilmoth and Blackburn.
Glasco won 6-2, 6-2 and looks to defend her conference crown today against Shelton, who beat Blackburn 6-3, 6-1.
Blackburn and Wilmoth will play in the third-place match for the right to advance to the regional.
The finals and third-place matches will take place at 4 p.m. at Mount Airy Middle School.
