KNOXVILLE — In a tune up for this week’s east coast home school tournament, the Surry Home Educators Runnin’ Patriot girls basketball team traveled across the North Carolina-Tennessee border to take on some unknown competition.

The Runnin’ Pat girls didn’t disappoint, going 1-1 on Saturday by defeating Nashville Home School 55-30 and losing a double-overtime thriller to Knoxville Home School, 65-64.

After cruising in the first game of the day against Nashville, the Runnin’ Pats found themselves struggling to stay close during the fourth quarter in their second game against Knoxville.

Down 12 points at one point at the start of the fourth, Surry rallied behind the 3-point shooting of Molly Hamilton, Hannah Tompkins and Becca Sikes.

“It was a very intense game,” Surry coach Glen Edwards said Sunday. “We had opportunities to win at the end of the game and at the end of both overtimes and we could just not close the deal. It was a very well played game with both teams very evenly matched.”

Edwards said there were some differences with playing outside of North Carolina, particularly with the amount of physical play the officals allowed to take place.

“The officiating in Tennessee was a little bit different,” Edwards said. “They were much, much tighter on the fouls. We had played physical all year and they took that away from us. With a minute left in the first quarter they (Knoxville) were already in the bonus.”

Next, the North Carolina home school state champion Runnin’ Pats will play in the east coast home school tournament, held at Liberty University.

After a long weekend, Surry will need its rest to get ready for a hectic week, which will see them play five games in three days, with the opening round of pool-play in the 14-team tournament kicking off Wednesday afternoon.
