According to a press release from Surry County Schools, North Surry head varsity football coach Mitch Martin resigned from his position Friday, ending a three-year run with the Greyhounds.

Martin was unavailable for comment following the announcement.

The Greyhounds finished 4-8 in 2008, losing to Mount Pleasant in the first-round of the NCHSAA 2-A state playoffs, 32-14.

After returning just four starters from a 6-6 2007 campaign, North found themselves with a relatively new team.

Led by sophomore quarterback Tanner Hiatt and senior runningback-linebacker John Hughes, the Greyhounds dropped five straight to open the season.

However, things picked up once North entered its Mountain Valley Conference schedule, with the Greyhounds winning four of their next five games, defeating Surry Central, Forbush, North Wilkes and Wilkes Central to finish 4-2 in conference play.

No information on the process to find Martin’s replacement was available as of Friday evening.

In the release, North Surry Principal Bill Goins thanked Martin for his years of service and connection with the students and community.

“Coach Martin has been an asset to North Surry High School for many years,” said North Surry Principal Bill Goins. “His teaching, coaching, and camaraderie with the community speak very highly of his long-standing service. We are grateful for his commitment and dedication to the North Surry High School football program and wish him the best with all his future endeavors.”

Martin plans to remain at North Surry as a Construction Technology teacher in the Career Technical Education program.
