East Surry used a Walt Tuttle homer and benefited from three North Surry errors to claim a 5-4 win in the non-section contest.

The Cardinals got on the board in the top of the second when North Surry recorded three errors that led to a pair of East Surry runs.

The Cardinals held a 4-0 advantage until the bottom of the fourth. North Surry’s Cody Palmer led off the inning with a walk, followed by Champ Reynolds, who was hit by a pitch. Shortly after Taylor Hull walked to the plate, the Greyhounds were only down one.

“Taylor Hull hit a monster bomb,” Collins said. “He hit it at least 400 feet.”

East Surry got on the board again in the sixth when Logan Needham’s fielder’s choice drove in a run.

Each team had three errors, although the game was well-played for the most part.

“Usually games this early in the year are sloppy,” North Surry coach Tim Collins said. “Each team had a bad inning early. Other than that it was a clean game.”

North Surry starter Michael Ronson got the loss, but gained the respect of his coach. Ronson, who has battled back from a hamstring injury, worked his way out of several jams, including the third inning, when he got out of a situation in which East Surry loaded the bases with no outs, but did not score.

North Surry falls to 1-1 and will host West Stokes Thursday. East Surry hosts Starmount at 5 p.m. today. That game was originally scheduled for noon, but was pushed back due to the Cardinals girls basketball team’s regional championship game today at noon in Greensboro.
