DOBSON — Surry Central scored four goals in each half to beat North Surry 8-0 in soccer Monday.
In a makeup game from a rainout, the Golden Eagles put up those eight goals in about 60 minutes before the game was scoreless for the last 20 minutes.
Central Coach Blake Roth said he gave his team three names to remember. He wanted them to key on slowing those players down, and he was pleased with the results.
Hector Zubieta hustled all over the place and got to a lot of balls, but he didn’t hurt the Eagles, noted Roth.
“Caleb Ramey did his best to control the midfield,” said Roth. “I’ve known him for four years now. I wanted to put an extra pair of eyes on him.”
By controlling possessions and cutting off passing lanes, the Eagles were able to limit touches of scorer Mitchell Midkiff.
“I was tickled that we were able to hold Midkiff down,” he said.
As for his own team, sophomore Jose Avalos was responsible for five of the eight goals. He assisted on three goals and scored two himself, including the first of the game just three minutes into the action.
One of the recipients of Avalos’ passing was Francisco Rangel, who scored a hat trick of three goals.
Adrian Gonzalez scored one goal and added two assists.
Scoring one goal each were Juan Lopez and Juan Padilla.
Providing an assist each were Fredy Cruz and Victor Rocha.
Roth said he was particularly pleased with Rocha’s play.
The ball went out on the side off North Surry, he described. Rocha picked the ball up quickly and fired it in to Avalos for a score. It’s not very often an assist comes off a throw-in like that, the coach noted.
One area where the Eagles struggled was on corner kicks.
“We need to get better on our set pieces,” the coach admitted. He and assistant coach Matt Richardson will have to go back to the drawing board on those plays, he said.
On set pieces like hand balls and corner kicks, none of the players were on the same page, so the team has to communicate better.
“Other than that, we really did do a lot of good things out on the pitch,” he said. Some of the goals came by beating the Greyhounds down the field, while others were knocking the ball around and finishing the opportunities.
North Surry hosts East Surry today at 6 p.m., while the Eagles don’t play again until Thursday.
