• A Mount Airy funeral home was the scene of a theft involving thousands of dollars’ worth of property, according to city police department reports. The crime was discovered Friday at Howell Funeral Service on West Lebanon Street, where four Lennox air-conditioning units had been removed using a cutting device. The units were valued altogether at $7,500.

• A Mount Airy woman is facing larceny and other charges as the result of a “huffing” incident at Walmart. Crystal Nicole Barker, 31, of 125 Tarheel Lane, allegedly was observed concealing four canned-aired containers by store security personnel Wednesday and also inhaling the product. Barker left in a Toyota Camry and later was found at her residence, passed out in the vehicle and holding one of the cans, police records show.

In addition to larceny, she is accused of possession of stolen property (the canned-air items valued at $20), possessing a toxic-vapors substance, inhaling toxic vapors and second-degree trespassing for being at Walmart after having been banned. Barker was held in the Surry County Jail under a $2,500 secured bond and is scheduled to be in District Court on Nov. 7.

• Luke Marcus McMillian, 29, of 158 Toast Road, was arrested on felony charges of larceny and possession of stolen goods last Tuesday after he was located during a trespassing investigation at 1221 W. Pine St., listed as the address for Hardee’s. McMillian was found to be wanted on those violations by county authorities, which led to him being jailed under a $5,000 secured bond. He is to appear in Surry District Court on Nov. 27.

• A case of damage to property occurred last Tuesday at WilcoHess on Rockford Street, where an unknown liquid was poured onto the hood of a 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix owned by Arlis Gregory Lowery, who lives on Gospel Time Way. The incident caused $1,000 in damage to the paint.

• Kenneth Wayne Inscore, a Worth Street resident, told police last Tuesday that he was the victim of an identity theft, involving an unknown party stealing his personal information in an attempt to obtain a credit card.

• Linda Daye George, 34, whose address is listed as Starlite Motel, was charged last week with malicious conduct by a prisoner, a felony; resisting a public officer; and simple assault. George was encountered by police at the motel late on the evening of Sept. 17 in reference to a domestic disturbance. An investigation revealed that she allegedly had assaulted her boyfriend, Fredrick Guthrie, by slamming his head into a wall.

When police attempted to arrest the woman, she is said to have resisted by jerking her arms away. After being taken into custody, George allegedly spit in the face of Officer S.C. Darnell. She was confined in the Surry County Jail with no bond figure listed and is facing a Nov. 14 court appearance.
