PILOT MOUNTAIN — During the monthly meeting of the Pilot Mountain Board of Commissioners on Monday night at 7 p.m., a proposed animal ordinance will, if adopted, require pet owners to register their pets with the town.
The proposal also requires pet owners to keep their pet’s rabies vaccinations up-to-date and for any outdoor pets to be spayed or neutered.
The purpose of this ordinance is to obtain contact information in case the animal becomes separated from its owner, according to a notification from the town. It also allows the Pilot Mountain Police Department and officers with Surry County Animal Control to return pets to their owners.
While no registration fee is stated on the proposal, it states that fines may be imposed.
“Failure to renew a license by the 30th calendar day after such license is due for renewal shall result in a $10 late renewal fee. Any animals identified as stray will be picked up and transported to the Surry County Animal Shelter where the owner may contact to retrieve.”
Also on the agenda is a public forum. Meigs Needham is scheduled to speak about bringing safe routes to schools to Pilot Mountain.
The board will also discuss the possibility of adding downtown public restrooms.
The board will hear reports from each of the town’s departments before hearing the town manager’s report.

The town's tax base is, at best, stagnating (likely shrinking). We have become almost wholly dependent on outsiders coming to town for Cruise-Ins once a month. We can't get potholes repaired on Dodson Mill Rd in less than a year. But the Council's priority is stray cats that poop in Mr. Bell's yard?
