The 6th Annual Ride for the Rescuers in memory of Layne Creed will be held Saturday starting at 13 Bones.
This year, the proceeds from the ride will go to the Children’s Center of Surry and two $250 scholarships will be awarded to Surry Community College students.
Creed died on Aug. 19, 2006, at Lake Norman when he and some friends fell into the water. Following his death, his family and friends decided to carry on his name through helping others in his home community.
Registration will be at 13 Bones from 10 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Kickstands will go up at 12 p.m. sharp. The ride will end at the Mount Airy Elks Lodge.
Creed’s sisters, Velvet Leonard and Renee Ross are organizing this year’s event.
“We are hoping for a big crowd — 13 bones has been a big help. They are always so good to us, and the community. Last year we had 160 bikes and most bikes had two people, so there were about 200 there last year. We want to welcome everyone to come out to have a good time and enjoy the day,” said Leonard.
The $15 cost includes a poker hand, an armband, dinner and a ticket for door prizes. The cost for non-playing riders is $10. The cost for dinner only is $10. Armbands are required to play poker or eat dinner. The winning hand pays $100.
Vehicles of all types are all welcome.
In case of bad weather, there will be a poker run without the ride. Music will be provided by a DJ at 5 p.m. at the Elks Lodge. T-shirts will also be on sale the day of the ride.
The dinner will include barbecue plates with beans, potatoes, cole slaw, bread and a soda or water.
“Anybody is more than welcome to come eat with us that night,” said Leonard.
For those who don’t want to ride, donations will be excepted.
There are $1 tickets for sale now at 13 Bones for a chance to win a set of Harley Davidson corn hole boards. The money will go to the Children’s Center of Surry in memory of Layne Creed. One of the boards is on display at 13 Bones. The boards were made and donated by Tim and David Jones of TW Signs.
