PILOT MOUNTAIN — East Surry stopped the Wildcats’ winning streak with a 2-2 tie in soccer Thursday.

West Stokes played some tough competition in its early schedule and started the season 0-4-1.

Then after a 1-0 win over R.J. Reynolds, the Cats ran off five wins over the Northwest Conference.

The Cardinals were no chumps, going into the game with a 6-3 record themselves.

West Stokes scored first, but the Cards answered with two goals and led 2-1 at the break.

The Wildcats’ Will Hopper converted a breakaway in 20th minute for the first score.

Then six minutes later, East Surry earned a corner kick. Ethan Atkins lofted the ball high to the box, and Andrew Kozlow made the header.

Later in the half, the Cards drew a free kick just across midfield.

Austin Haymore sent a ball high on a diagonal, recalled Coach Bill Hart. Cole Casstevens was playing the backside and headed the ball into the net.

Six minutes into the second half, West Stokes tied the game. For the rest of the half and overtime, neither team could convert.

This was a hard-fought battle between two determined teams, said Hart.

West Stokes is undefeated in conference play, so earning a tie is a worthy achievement, the coach believed.

The Cardinals travel to West Wilkes on Monday, then go to North Surry on Tuesday.
