CANA, Va. — Mrs. Vergie Utt Hiatt, 88, of Cana, went to be with the Lord on Friday, Sept. 14, 2012, at Hertiage Hall/Laurel Meadows in Laurel Fork. She was born April 19, 1924, in Carroll County to the late George V. and Hattie McMillian Utt. She was married to Melvin G. Hiatt in 1947, they shared 65 wonderful years together. A beloved mother and grandmother, she will be fondly be remembered as providing a loving home to her family and for all her work as a caregiver. She was an amazing woman with a generous heart. She was loved by her family, friends and neighbors. She will be remembered by many for all the special times she spent with them on her front porch. As an avid home cook and canner, she made the best fried apple pies, cornbread and chocolate pies imaginable. She will be deeply missed and never forgotten by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Her spirit will live on through our memories. Mrs. Hiatt was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband, Melvin Hiatt of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Cleve Vass of Cana; a son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Dorothy A. Hiatt of Cana; four beloved grandchildren, Tina Vass Smith of Hillsville, Danielle Hiatt of Ararat, Kelly Hiatt-Thomas and spouse, John Paul Thomas, of Floyd and Timothy Vass and spouse, April Vass, of Fancy Gap; two great-grandchildren, Jossie Irene Vass and Audrey Claire Thomas; three brothers and four sisters-in-law, Vernon and Frances Utt, Lonnie and Mabel Utt, Wallace and Movita Utt and Louise Utt, all of Cana; and many nieces, nephews and special friends. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hiatt was preceded in death by three brothers, Leonard Utt, Jim Utt and Edsel Utt; and a sister, Ola Haynes. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 16, 2012, at Oak Grove Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Oscar Hill with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Moody Funeral Home. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
