KING — Mount Airy swept West Stokes 9-0 in tennis Thursday, keeping its Northwest Conference record perfect.

The Lady Bears (11-2, 8-0) gave up just three games in singles play.

Coach Scott Kniskern said he couldn’t attend because he was taking part in the Chairman’s Cup Golf Tournament sponsored by the Greater Mount Airy Chamber of Commerce. Boys Coach Rodney Pell is assistant for the girls team and led the squad down in Kniskern’s place.

Top seed Jordan Jackson won 6-0, 6-1 over Leah Shelton. Second seed Davi Barbour won 6-1, 6-0 over McKayla Newsome.

Jade Hughes swept the third match 6-0, 6-0 versus Abbey Emerson. Sister Bree also swept her games against Mariah Maynard in the fifth slot.

Fourth seed Haley Thomas beat Abbey Westmoreland 6-0, 6-1. Sixth seed Carley Vanhoy won 6-0, 6-0 over Erin Kye.

In doubles play, Mount Airy kept its top doubles team together, but went to its bench in the other two matches.

Barbour and Thomas lost their first three games, but then rebounded with an 8-1 run to defeat Shelton/Emerson.

Jade Hughes paired with India Inman to sweep Newsome/Westmoreland 8-0.

Jai Daniels and Sarah Kirkpatrick won 8-6 over Maynard/Kye.

The Lady Bears have two home matches next week. They host North Stokes on Tuesday and Bishop McGuinness on Thursday.
