PILOT MOUNTAIN — South Stokes took the top spot in girls golf for the second straight week, with East Surry and North Surry tied just three strokes behind.

Madison Moore and Kasie Tolbert were neck and neck last season for player of the year, and the two finished at the top again on Wednesday.

East Surry’s Moore finished first with a 40 on the par-35 course, while North Surry’s Tolbert was tied for second with South Stokes’ Megan Mabe at 42.

Still, the Cardinals and Greyhounds finished with a 141, three strokes behind the Lady Sauras.

Mabe’s 42 joined with Nicole Rogers’ 47 and Brooke Kiger’s 49 for a team total of 138.

Tolbert was joined by Gatlin Hiatt (tied for fifth with a 48) and Sarah Holleman (eighth with a 51).

East Surry’s scores came from Moore, Elizabeth Shelton (48) and Whitney Cox (53).

Mount Airy was fourth with a 177, and Surry Central was close behind in fifth at 180.

The weather was great, and the course was in nice condition, noted East Coach Chad Freeman.

Considering how nice it was, the players could have shot a little better, agreed Freeman and North Coach Daniel Johnson.

Kasie’s 42 wasn’t terrible, Johnson said, but she was unhappy with her putting.

Madison had a couple of shots she would like back as well, according to Freeman.

Johnson said he was pleased with the growth of his fourth and fifth seeds.

Emma Cassell is just a sophomore, and she’s shot a 51 and a 56 the first two weeks after shooting up close to 60 last season.

Rachel Hull is a good, young softball player who is trying golf for the first time. Johnson said he would have been OK with the rookie shooting the maximum 63 on the course, but she came in at 58 and continues to improve.

Next Wednesday, the schools play at Cross Creek, which is familiar grounds for North Surry and Mount Airy.

That could give the Hounds an advantage next week, Freeman said, so his squad will have to come prepared.
