PILOT MOUNTAIN — East Surry defended its home court with a 6-3 win over Surry Central Tuesday.
The Lady Cardinals took four of six singles matches and two of three doubles matches for the win.
The Lady Eagles came into the day fresh off a long, grueling 5-4 loss to North Stokes Monday. Four of the six singles matches went to a third set, and one of the others went to a tiebreaker in the second set.
The Cards took the top spot as Lauren Thompson beat Savannah Wilson 6-3, 6-2.
Brooke Tickle looked well on her way to making it 2-0 against Central’s Marlee Wilmoth. Tickle won the first set 6-1 and was up 4-3 in the second set.
Wilmoth tied the match and forced a second-set tiebreaker. After winning that, Wilmoth then took the pro set in the third frame 11-9.
For the third seeds, East’s Haley Manuel beat Megan Gillespie 7-5, 6-2. At the fourth spot, East’s Tiffany King beat Kennedy Dockery 6-1, 6-0.
The fifth seeds held another long match.
East’s Allie Hawks was dominant in the first set, winning 6-0. However, Central’s Mikayla Cox roared back to take a 6-2 second set. In the third frame, Hawks pulled out a 10-4 win.
Central’s Abby Samuels won the sixth slot 6-1, 6-3 against Hannah Haynes.
East needed to win just one of the three doubles matches to secure the team win.
The Cards took the top two matches.
Tickle and Manuel bested Wilson and Gillespie 10-6. Thompson and King beat Wilmoth and Sommer Chilton 10-3.
Central’s Cox and Samuels won 8-3 over Hawks and Haynes in the third match.
East Coach Mike Kiser said he saw better net play during the doubles matches, and the players were moving better. Getting a tough win over a conference rival should help improve their confidence, too, he believed.
East Surry hosts North Surry tomorrow, while Surry Central travels to Bishop McGuinness.
