WINSTON-SALEM — Mount Airy pounced on Winston-Salem Prep early and often for a 9-0 soccer win Monday evening.

The Granite Bears received scores from seven players to down the Phoenix early in the second half.

It was a good overall team effort, said Coach Will Hurley. The starters and the reserves showed good hustle.

Mitchell Brown scored two goals and had two assists to account for four of the nine points.

Forward Tyler Wall also had two goals. Hurley said he was really pleased to see Tyler break through twice.

The young man has been putting a lot of pressure on himself on score, the coach explained.

“He came alive in this game so hopefully he’ll continue that on to (today’s) game,” said Hurley.

Since Prep doesn’t have a JV team, Hurley said he took four JV players with him and gave the boys some time.

One of those, Gentry Williamson, scored his first-ever varsity goal.

Also for the Bears Alexis Alvarez had one goal and one assist. Others scoring were Sam Watson, Cristian Maldonado and Corey Valentine.

Providing assists were Carlos Carrillo, Cristian Cabrera and Hunter Clawson.

Cristian Cabrera came up huge on defense, including 19 clears.

The Bears improved to 8-2, with eight straight wins since dropping the first two matches.

Still, Mount Airy isn’t getting any love in the 1A coaches’ poll. The Bears still aren’t ranked in the top 15, while teams they have beaten are: East Surry (10) and Elkin (14).

The Bears travel to North Surry today.
