KING — East Surry swept its fourth-straight volleyball match at West Stokes Tuesday.
Since losing in a tri-match against powerful Starmount and Hickory, the Lady Cardinals have taken all 12 sets in conference action for a 4-0 Northwest record and 7-2 overall.
All three sets against the Lady Wildcats started off tight before the Cards could pull away, according to Coach Caleb Gilley.
The first set was the closest at 25-18, then the Cards won more easily at 25-13 and 25-14.
The defense was great all evening, Gilley said. The back line was receiving the serve well and making digs. The front line provided blocks and covered tips.
“This was probably our most complete game from a defensive standpoint,” said Gilley. “We moved as good as we have all year, covering spots.”
In three sets, the back line made only two errors on serve-receive, he noted.
Sydney Mosley led the defense with 11 digs. Laken Bowman added six, Olivia Sheets five and Ashley Smith three.
Keri Fulp led the front line with six blocks in addition to her game-high 21 kills.
Kacie Markle added five kills, Gabi Jessup three kills and Smith two.
Sheets led the way with 22 assists, while Smith added three.
“Our serving was good in first two games,” Gilley said. The team may not have missed a single serve in the first two sets, before having a few mistakes in the final frame.
Fulp provided four aces and Sheets two.
“We still have things to work on offensively, though,” he added.
The Cards were set to play East Wilkes today, but the opposing coach canceled due to a schedule conflict.
Instead, the Cards next match is Thursday at home against South Stokes.
