This parents-only workshop is meant to help them better understand the process of transitioning their child from high school to college, and provide information on the programs and opportunities the college has to offer. The event is scheduled from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., and will begin in the cafeteria where complimentary food and local high school entertainment will be provided. The welcome session will begin at 6:30 p.m. in room A121.
The evening will include breakout workshop sessions that will last 30 minutes each. Parents may select three workshops to attend from a variety of offerings including those that focus on how to apply to college, financial aid procedures, transitioning to college for exceptional children, transfer degrees, and career and technical paths of study.
Although “No Parent Left Behind” is timed to help transition senior-year students into college this fall, parents who have children in grades nine through eleven are encouraged to attend. One workshop, called “One Year of College Free,” will educate attendees on how students can obtain college credit while still enrolled in high school, and will look at the Huskins Program, Dual Enrollment and Articulated Credits.
“We are excited to have this opportunity to showcase some of our programs and to allow parents to spend some time with our faculty and see what Surry Community College has to offer,” said Anne Marie Hardy, director of career services.
This is the second year the college will be coordinating this event. “We had a great turnout last year, and hope to attract even more participants this year,” Hardy said.
