DOBSON—Thursday the town of Dobson will welcome its newly appointed commissioner, J. Wayne Atkins, and discuss events for the upcoming 2009 North Carolina State Harley Owners Group Rally in August.

Atkins, who is the former Dobson town manager, is filling the vacant seat of former commissioner Stan Newman, 32, who resigned last month to fill a position with the county as a local ordinance officer. Atkins will complete the unexpired four-year term of Newman, which ends in December.

Atkins, 65, who served as the Dobson town manager for 20 years and retired two years ago, said he hopes his experience will benefit the board with its ongoing projects.

“I thought maybe I could help some since I am familiar with the budget and the agencies that the town works with, and I grew up in the area,” Atkins said Tuesday. “I thought it would be a good time to give back. Times are tough and everybody can do something. I am going to help out as much as I can.”

Atkins said he had not yet decided whether he would re-file for the position. The re-filing period for the position is July 3 starting at noon, and ends July 17 at noon.

According to an agenda released earlier this week, the board will also hear from Laurette Leagon, the president and chief executive officer of the Yadkin Valley Chamber of Commerce about the HOG Rally.

In August 2008 Mount Airy was selected to host the state event through Aug. 21.-23, which is expected to draw more than 2,000 Harley Davidson motorcycle owners to Surry County.

HOG, which has been in existence for 25 years, is a motorcycle group that was formed as a way for the Harley Davidson Company to stay connected to its customers. Each year the organization hosts several events, including statewide rallies, where motorcyclists typically stay in a host city and its surrounding area from Thursday to Sunday.

Lynn Burcham, the Dobson town manager, said that the Yadkin Valley Chamber-Dobson Division will be handling the events for motorcyclists in the Dobson area.

During the meeting the board will also:

• Recognize James Hayden for his years of service on the Dobson Planning Board

• Recognize Stan Newman for his years of service to Dobson

• Consider adoption of a resolution of support for Veteran’s Stamp, Bond and Coin Program

• Consider a request for aerial photos of the proposed Prison Camp Road Sewer Project

• Consider bids received on sale of surplus property

• Consider a recreation fund request from Dobson Hornets Softball

• Consider a request for recreation funds from the Dobson Community Council

• Consider an appointment to the Dobson Tourism Authority Board since Bob Comer’s term expires March 1, and he does not wish to serve another term

• Review updates on various grant projects and other ongoing town projects

The board will go into closed session to discuss a land acquisition and will resume in open session to address general town business.

The board is meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday in the town hall meeting room. Meetings are open to the public.
