ARARAT — A 6-year-old was airlifted Friday night after nearly drowning at Homeplace Park.
According to John Shelton, director of Surry County Emergency Services, the boy was seen rolling in the water, then he floated to the surface face down. He said thanks to the quick actions and CPR skills of off-duty Mount Airy Police Officer James Simmons and two other young men, the little boy’s life was saved.
“They did a great job with CPR. They worked on him until they were able to get his pulse back,” said Shelton.
The Ararat Volunteer Fire Department assisted by setting up a landing zone at the park.
The boy, whose name could not be released because he is a minor, was taken by AirCare to Wake Forest Baptist Health.
Shelton said he heard on Saturday that the boy had stabilized.
The incident happened between 7:30 and 8 p.m. Friday. Shelton said the boy was underwater for several minutes before his rescuers pulled him out.
