The Surry County Board of Commissioners is set to give the final okay to a couple of long-running projects, but not before taking a moment to honor a fallen board member.

Prior to getting into their agenda, the board is expected to take time to celebrate the life of the late Garry Emerson Scearce, who died on July 22 following a prolonged battle with cancer.

The remembrance will take place when the full board convenes for its regularly scheduled meeting at 6 p.m., in the Surry County Government Center in Dobson.

Following the celebration of Scearce’s life, the board will get back to business with Tax Administrator Michael Hartgrove reporting to the board on the annual tax settlement for fiscal year 2011-2012.

The board also is expected to present Assistant County Manager for Budget and Finance Betty Taylor with a certificate of achievement for excellence in financial reporting, and recognize former County Manager Dennis Thompson by passing a resolution of respect.

Following these actions, the board will hold a public hearing on the updated Land Use Plan, and is likely to pass a resolution formally accepting the plan following the hearing.

County Attorney Ed Woltz is expected to request a formal resolution from the board finalizing the sale of the county’s home health care operations to a private company.

The board will also hear an update from County Manager Chris Knopf on the ongoing issues associated with the long-awaited Interstates Sewer Project, and may take action following the update, although no vote is on the agenda.
