ARARAT — The investigation into the cause of a fire to an unoccupied structure Saturday evening is ongoing.
“I’m not treating this as a suspicious fire but the cause is undetermined and is still under investigation,” commented Assistant Fire Marshal Earl Mounce.
According to Mounce, the structure is located at 127 Teena Court in the Blackwater community of Ararat and is owned by Barry and Teresa Smith. Fire departments from White Plains, Ararat and South Surry responded to the call at about 9:26 p.m. He added that the owners had locked and secured the structure and had left an hour-and-a-half before the fire.
Mounce indicated that it was an older mobile home, manufactured in the 1960s. Preliminary evidence suggests that the fire was confined to the north end of the trailer with smoke and heat damage occurring to the remainder of the structure. Mounce gave no dollar estimate of the damages but said that repairs would be cost prohibitive considering the age of the mobile home. He said no one was injured in connection with the fire.
