The winners of this year’s Run to the Ridge Barbecue Cookoff have been announced.
Danny Speer of Titans of Taste took home the trophy for first place this year. Eddie Matthews and Neil Doub of Buffalo Slow Cookers of East Bend placed second. Tyre Draughn placed third. Andy Reece of 13 Bones placed fourth.
According to Speer, there were eight teams competing this year.
All of the pork was sold in one pound increments for $5 and all of the proceeds went to the Second Harvest Food Bank.
Gray Gwyn, owner of Mount Airy Meat Center, donated the pigs for the competition.
“He was a big help. If it weren’t for sponsors like him, we couldn’t have had this competition. I think he deserves a round of applause,” said Run to the Ridge organizer Ric Marshall.
G&B Energy of Pilot Mountain donated two cookers because two of the teams couldn’t make it, but the pigs still had to be cooked and sold to raise money.
“We had a good time. I know we will do it again,” said Speer.
The second annual Run to the Ridge event was held at Veterans Park last weekend. All of the food collected and proceeds from the event will be donated to the Second Harvest Food Bank, which contributes food back to the food pantries in Surry County.
