Nicole Rumplasch paced the Greyhounds balanced scoring attack with a game-high 14 points. Freshman Morgan Bunker also hit double figures in the win with 10 points. All but one Greyhound scored.
Lindsay Waller led North Wilkes with 12 points.
Early in the first quarter both teams traded baskets and with the score tied at four, Emily Culler connected on a 3-pointer to give the Greyhounds the lead at 7-4; a lead that the Greyhounds wouldn’t relinqish.
After a North Wilkes basket by Melissa West to cut the deficit to three at 11-8, the Greyhounds would break the game wide open with a 20-1 run stretching from near the end of the first quarter to nearly the end of the second quarter.
North Surry outscored the Vikings 18-3 in the deciding second quarter.
North Surry Coach Shane Slate credited his team effort on defense for the big run. “In the second quarter I thought we picked it up on defense, it was like we slept walked through the first quarter. “We got pressure on the ball, and forced some turnovers.”
In the third quarter neither team could seem to find the basket as North Surry outscored North Wilkes 9-7.
In the fourth quarter with the game well-in-hand North Surry would empty their bench getting everyone involved in the win as they outscored the Vikings 18-7 to stretch out the lead and get the win.
“We got off to a slow start, we came out with no intensity,” said Slate after the game. “After the first quarter we picked it up and was paitent and got some good shots in the half-court.”
With the win the Greyhounds improved to 19-4 overall and advances to take on the winner of Starmount and Surry Central Thursday night in the second round at Ashe County.
