DOBSON — During the regular monthly meeting of the Dobson Board of Commissioners on Thursday night, there will be a public hearing concerning the annexation of a portion of Cody Creek, a nearby private property that caters to weddings and dining.

Ten acres of the property, which is owned by Fred Snow, is estimated to be worth roughly $1 million. If it is approved, that would mean about $4,000 a year in tax revenue for the town, according to Dobson Town Manager Josh Smith.

There is a reception hall on the property where food and wine are served. Smith said it is mainly used for weddings.

Smith said the town already has provided Snow with water and sewer on the property. If the annexation is approved, Snow also will have other town services such as police, fire and free garbage pick-up. Smith said the owner would be able to sell mixed beverages at the establishment once annexed if he chose to do so as well.

Also during the meeting, Smith will give the board the town’s fiscal performance report.

The board will consider an amendment to the town’s public nuisance code ordinances. Smith said the amendment will include revised enforcement measures on nuisances such as high grass and excessive weeds.

Commissioners also will consider entering into an option-purchase agreement with Surry County concerning a property the town would like to purchase within town limits.

“We would like to enter into an option agreement with the county for this downtown parcel, securing the land for future recreation development should grant funds be awarded to the town. Surry County commissioners have already executed this agreement. The primary purpose of the agreement is secure our rights to purchase that property if we are awarded grant money,” said Smith.

He said the ultimate objective of having the agreement is to build a park on that land as well as an adjacent parcel that the town already has secured the rights to through a similar purchase-option agreement with owner Paul Jackson.

The board also will discuss general town business.

There will be a forum for public comments at the beginning of the meeting that starts at town hall at 6 p.m.

There is no closed session planned for this meeting.
