County residents and their canine companions are invited to visit Round Peak Vineyard for a summer favorite — the Dog Days of Summer event.
The celebration of everything wine and pooches is scheduled from 11 a.m., until 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 11. This is the third year it will be held at the vineyard, located at 765 Round Peak Church Road in Mount Airy.
Round Peak Vineyard Owner Kari Heerdt said it simply makes sense to have the event at the winery.
“We’re a dog friendly winery, so we love dogs and it’s just a real natural fit for us to partner with local dog rescue organizations and work with them to raise money to do good things in our community,” she said.
Heerdt said that while she considers last year’s event a success, she’s hoping for bigger and better this year, noting that a similar event has been held in downtown Mount Airy, but isn’t being held this year.
“This year, Mount Airy isn’t doing their Dog Days event, so we’re hoping people who would normally go to that will come out and participate in our event,” she said. “It’s still in the community and still benefiting the same organizations. Hopefully it will be a real enjoyable day for everyone who comes out.”
Events on tap this year include a dog wash and dog adoption event, both of which will run throughout the Dog Days celebration.
In addition, contests will be held for dogs beginning at 1 p.m., including the cutest dog, a doggie pie eating contest and P’Nut Butter Kissing.
A doggie Olympics will be held at 2 p.m., featuring dog races, an obstacle course and a tug-of-war.
During the Dog Days celebration, food will be available throughout the day and wine and beer tastings will be available beginning at 11 a.m.
The event is free and open to both the two and four-legged public.

Organizer Jane Taylor, who works with Mayberry4Paws and is an advocate for spaying and neutering, noted that Round Peak Vineyard is a wonderful place to take your dog.
“(They) are great dog people and work to support rescue and adoption in our area,” she said. “Theirs is the only dog-friendly vineyard in our area.
“There is a doggie play area adjacent to the tasting room!”
