On Tuesday, a Surry County Deputy who was on standby on Bryant Road got more than he bargained for when he ended up chasing a man who fled his pursuit.

Deputy Mike Lawson was at 920 Bryant Road about 4:30 p.m. when a red Mitsubishi Montero Sport passed him with a blue All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) sticking out of the back of a four-door SUV, according to Sheriff Graham Atkinson.

Lawson considered that suspicious and tried to make a vehicle stop. The driver of the SUV then sped up before turning into a driveway at 703 Bryant Road. Atkinson said the man, who was white with short blond hair in his early 20s, drove down a long driveway before jumping out and running through a field.

Lawson chased the suspect, who was not wearing a shirt, through the field to a wood line.

Atkinson said the vehicles were seized.

Deputies found spoons, needles and a white powder in the SUV, Atkinson said.

He said when the man is caught, he will be charged with felony speed to elude.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Surry County Sheriff’s Office at 401-8900.
