Live music, games, food, a cruise-in and a dunking booth will be among the attractions at a Saturday fundraiser for a Surry County commissioner suffering from cancer.

Activities are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Park on West Lebanon Street with the aim of offsetting medical expenses accumulated by Commissioner Garry Scearce since his colon-cancer diagnosis last year.

Everyone is urged to attend “and help him out,” said Rawley King, who has spearheaded Saturday’s event. King said Scearce has proven himself to be a faithful public servant, as both a county commissioner representing the Mount Airy District and earlier through many years of work as a Surry Emergency Medical Service paramedic.

Two bands will perform Saturday, The Round Peak Ramblers, an old-time group, and RHYTHM, a dance band headed by EMS Director John Shelton which specializes in beach, country and rock music.

Hot dogs and hamburgers will be sold, with the food to be donated and prepared by members of the park’s governing board.

The American Legion Riders motorcycle group also is planning a poker run in conjunction with the event.

A cruise-in by the local Cruise-In for Christ organization will be held at the park as well, Clay Honeycutt, head of the group, said Monday. It will be open to all types of vehicles, with no trophies awarded.

Dunking Booth

Other entertainment Saturday will be in the form of a dunking booth, with Scearce’s fellow commissioners among the targets.

“I think Commissioner (Buck) Golding has volunteered for a stint in it,” board member Paul Johnson said Monday. “I suppose I’m going to be in it some.”

Johnson said a bounce house will be available Saturday for children, along with games such as cornhole and horseshoes.

A 50/50 drawing also is planned.

Donations will be accepted in addition to money raised by concession sales, and contributions to help Scearce also can be made to a special fund established at a local bank.

Checks may be made payable to the Garry Scearce Benefit and mailed to Southern Community Bank, 255 E. Independence Blvd., Mount Airy, NC 27030.

Johnson said Scearce hopes to attend Saturday’s gathering.

In addition to it, an auction to assist with his medical expenses is scheduled for Aug. 25 at the Flat Rock Ruritan Club building
