An accident involving two pedestrians just after midnight Sunday morning in Mount Airy is under investigation by the Mount Airy Police Department.

According to information supplied by Sgt. G. Daughenbuagh and Surry County Emergency Services Director John Shelton, the incident occurred at 12:37 a.m. on the roadway of U.S. 601 between Cook-Out Restaurant and Mt. Airy Yamaha.

The accident report indicates that two individuals, believed to be father and son, had re-crossed the roadway back from the Yamaha dealership towards Cook-Out when they were struck by a vehicle. The older of the two unidentified pedestrians, who appeared to be in his late 40s or 50s, was transported to Wake Forest Baptist Health in serious condition by Surry County EMS after AirCare was unavailable due to weather conditions.

The younger pedestrian appeared to have suffered some broken bones but refused transportation by emergency medical services personnel. Daughenbaugh said the accident report indicated that the two pedestrians were wearing dark colored clothing and were not seen by the driver of the vehicle.

Identities of the individuals involved have not been released pending notification of the family who officials had not been able to reach as of noon. The incident is considered an ongoing investigation by MAPD Senior Officer R. Bennett.
