An employee of a local retail store has been accused of felonious embezzlement.

The incident was reported Monday by loss-prevention personnel of Goody’s Family Clothing Inc., in Forrest Oaks Shopping Center on Rockford Street.

Mount Airy police were told that an employee there had issued gift cards to herself without paying for them. Two gift cards with a total value of $186 were involved, according to arrest records.

The wrongdoing is said to have occurred sometime between last Thursday and Monday.

After the complaint to authorities, Maghan Nicole Kiser, 17, of 363 Stardust Trail, was arrested and charged with embezzlement in the case. She submitted a written confession, according to police.

Kiser was released under a $5,000 unsecured bond on the felony offense. She is scheduled to appear in Surry District Court on March 26.

It was announced in early January that the Goody’s Family Clothing chain would be closing its 287 stores in 20 Southern and Midwestern states. That includes two in Surry County, operating in Mount Airy and Elkin.

Goody’s has been viewed as a casualty of the worsening economy, with disappointing Christmas sales hastening the discount clothing chain’s demise.

Since the closing announcement, special sales have been under way at the local Goody’s and other stores in the chain aimed at liquidating their merchandise.

The Goody’s in Mount Airy is expected to close sometime in March, a store spokesman said Wednesday.
