Robbie Rives scored a game-high 20 points in Mount Airy’s 67-57 win against South Stokes in a Northwest 1-A Conference basketball game on the Bears’ senior night Tuesday.

Dillon Bobbitt added 14 points, Wade Moody tossed in 12 points and Justin Collier added 10 for the Granite Bears, now 17-3 overall and 11-1 in conference.

The win was special for seniors Andrew Harris, Andrew Pelfrey, Drew Joyce, E.J. Valentine, Rives and Bobbitt.

“This has been such a great bunch of seniors,” Mount Airy boys basketball coach Kevin Spainhour said. “To have two of them, Harris and Rives, since they were 15-year-old freshmen, there’s been so many experiences we’ve gone through. Dillon Bobbitt, I coached his older brother. Being with E.J. Valentine and Drew Joyce, that’s why I’m in the business I am.”

Rives started off his senior night with a bang, hitting a 3-pointer on his first shot attempt from the field putting the Bears up 3-2 early in the first quarter.

The teams swapped lead changes several times before Mount Airy went ahead 15-13 on a Collier basket via the fast break with just over a minute left in the first.

E.J. Valentine came up with two big blocks late in the first quarter to help the Bears claw out an 18-13 lead after one.

Mount Airy used a little bit of razzle-dazzle in putting together a 12-7 run early in the second quarter. A Collier runner was within seconds followed by a loose Sauras’ ball, courtesy of Bobbitt’s mid-court pressure, leading to Collier’s recovery and layup on the Bears’ end. The basket put Mount Airy ahead 30-20 en route to a 39-25 halftime lead.

In the third quarter, both teams turned up the heat defensively as the Bears battled to their biggest lead of the game, 61-44.

But the Sauras used precision shooting to get back into the game as Cole Greene nailed a 3-pointer during the visitors’ 11-1 run.

With just under two minutes remaining, Mount Airy played keepaway offensively and converted on six of 10 free throws in the final minute-and-a-half to walk away 10-point winners, 67-57.

Spainhour said his team still looked a little off-kilter despite another win.

“I’ve felt the last three or four games we’ve played in spurts,” he said. “We played well at both ends, and we played pretty bad at both ends.”

Greene and Nick Adams led the Sauras with 15 points each.

Mount Airy will need a solid effort Thursday night when it travels to Bishop McGuinness for a Northwest 1-A Conference showdown.

Case leads Lady Bears

In the girls’ game, Ellie Case scored a game-high 19 points, including 14 points in the first half, as Mount Airy defeated South Stokes 56-40.

Case sank a trio of 3-pointers in the game, and Maggie McKee added 10 points for the Lady Bears, now 15-5 overall and 9-3 in conference.

Mount Airy raced out to a 22-10 lead, capped by a Taylor Hiatt baseline basket off her own offensive rebound of Jordan Hiatt’s missed 3-pointer.

The hosts then went on a 14-6 run as McKee hit a 3-point bomb late in the first half to give her team a 36-16 lead. Mount Airy lead 36-19 at the half.

The third quarter leaned slightly toward Mount Airy as the Bears outscored the Sauras 13-11. Midway through the third, Andria Leonard’s steal led to a Brittany Webster runner, putting the Bears up 47-23 with 2:43 left in the quarter. McKee added a 3-point buzzer beater at the end of the third to give the hosts a comfortable 49-30 lead.

Case added another 3-pointer down the stretch in the fourth quarter as Mount Airy put away South Stokes en route to its 56-40 win. Quayshanna Vernon led the Sauras with 13 points.

Mount Airy girls basketball coach Howard Mayo said his team did a “good job attacking the basket” for three quarters Tuesday night.

“Our depth was the difference,” Mayo added. “We just had more players than South Stokes. I thought at times we excelled at pressuring the basketball. On several possessions, we forced them to pick up the dribble.

“I wasn’t pleased with our intensity overall,” he concluded. “I thought we could’ve played a bit better.”

Mayo’s team has to say goodbye to a pair of seniors — Savannah Williams and Maggie McKee.

“This being their last home game, we appreciate the effort that Maggie and Savannah have given to our team,” Mayo said. “It’s a reflection of their commitment to our offseason program.”
