Alcohol is believed to have played a role in an early morning shooting Wednesday in Mount Airy that left one man seriously wounded and another jailed under a high bond.
Bobby Wayne Sizemore, 38, of 338 Durham St., suffered a gunshot wound to his side and was taken to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, according to Lt. J.A. Freeman of the Mount Airy Police Department’s detective unit.
Sizemore was in critical condition Wednesday afternoon. But, according to Freeman, “I don’t think it’s going to be a life-threatening wound.”
An acquaintance of Sizemore’s, Allen Dayton Worrell, 47, of 632 Sunset Drive, has been arrested on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon, inflicting serious injury. Worrell was being held in the Surry County Jail Wednesday under a $50,000 secured bond.
The two men were at Worrell’s residence when the incident occurred around 4 a.m., Freeman said. Explaining that detectives were still trying to piece together the details, he added that it is not known exactly what led up to the shooting.
“I’m sure alcohol played a role in it,” Freeman said.
Although Sizemore was wounded only once, it was unclear Wednesday if other shots were fired as well.
Officers executed a search warrant at Worrell’s home, which led to the seizure of an assault rifle and two handguns from the property. But information on which gun might have been used in the shooting has not been released.
An investigation by Sgt. Paul Barker is continuing, said Freeman, who added that Barker will be making an attempt to speak to the shooting victim as soon as possible.
Earlier Shooting
Wednesday’s incident was the second shooting at the Worrell residence in the past three years.
Worrell’s wife, Frankie Dianna Jones Worrell, allegedly shot herself accidentally with a high-powered rifle at the home on Nov. 24, 2006, according to previous reports.
She is said to have struck the weapon against something in her residence accidentally, which caused it to discharge and wound her in the stomach. Mrs. Worrell was airlifted to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, where she underwent surgery and initially was listed in critical condition.
The woman subsequently recovered from the injury.
