Starting at 160 pounds turned out to be a bad thing for the North Surry wrestling team Friday night, when four of their first five wrestlers to step on the mat lost.

Normalcy was returned, however, when 103-pounder Colby Bowman pinned his opponent in just over a minute. After that, the Greyhounds came back for a 41-24 win. The key, North Surry coach Eric Jessup said, was giving up only one pin in the early going.

“They got off to a pretty hot start,” Jessup said. “Even though we won one of those five, we only got pinned in one of them.

“When you start adding team scores, it’s a big difference when you have six points versus three points.”

The Greyhounds recorded five pins for essential points.

“We really did a good job in the match of capitalizing when we had chances to pin,” Jessup said. “Most of our losses were decision.”

With the comeback, the Greyhounds maintained their perfect record at 29-0, including a 5-0 record in the Mountain Valley 2-A Conference.

North Surry’s conference finale is Tuesday against visiting Surry Central. The match is slated for 7 p.m.
