East Surry downs East Wilkes, 65-44

RONDA — Andrew Hunter scored a game-high 14 points for East Surry in an impressive 65-44 victory over East Wilkes in Northwest 1-A Conference basketball Friday night.

Patrick Marion added 13 points for the visiting Cardinals, now 8-10 overall and 7-4 in conference play.

“I just thought we executed our offense really well the past three ballgames,” East Surry coach Jason Anderson said. “We’ve done a good job running our stuff with very few turnovers. There’s a long way to go in our conference season. I couldn’t be more pleased with where we are at this point.”

Leading East Wilkes, Graylon Tharpe scored a team-high 13 points.

East Surry led 33-24 at the half.

East Surry returns to action Tuesday hosting West Wilkes.

East girls cruise to victory

East Surry trailed early, but grabbed a second-quarter lead and never looked back in a 68-51 road victory against East Wilkes in Ronda Friday night.

East Surry was led by Kelsey Long’s 21 points. Courtney Simmons added 15 points and Paige Honeycutt, 10.

Midway through the second quarter, Courtney Simmons, Kelsey Long and Lea James all sank consecutive buckets for a 24-18 East Surry lead. East Surry led 30-23 at the half.

East surry shot the ball well in the second half, pulling ahead by 14, 43-29, after a Simmons layup.

“In all my years at East Surry, this has always been a tough place to play” East Surry coach Robert Smith said. “I thought we were real aggressive on the boards and we weathered their run. Our veteran players knew how to handle that. After last week’s loss to Mount Airy, we really needed this one badly.”

East Surry is currently second in the Northwest 1-A Conference.

Lea James grabbed 11 rebounds for East Surry, while Simmons and Long each had six assists.

Lauren Royal led East Wilkes with 23 points.
