Tommy and Barbara Leftwich Kingsbury of 146 Mahone St., Mount Airy, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Oct. 14, 2011. They were married on that date in 1961 at the home of the late Rev. D.B. and Maude Osborne in the Westfield township.
The couple was entertained with a surprise reception on Oct. 15 at the Franklin Volunteer Fire Department on Greenhill Road. Hosting the celebration were their children, Sarah Ann Kingsbury Carson and husband Tony of Lowgap and Thomas Kinsbury and wife Angie of Pilot Mountain; a granddaughter, Jessica Vernon; nieces, Donna Tolbert and Kim Roberts; and a great-niece, Bridgette Jenkins.
Their grandchildren are Reid Vernon III and wife Amanda of Lambsburg, Va., Garrett Vernon and wife Elizabeth of Mount Airy, Jessica Vernon and friend, Tyler Pennington, of Mount Airy and Garrett Cannoy and Aleigha Kingsbury, both of Pilot Mountain. Their great-grandchildren are Emma Vernon, Lynsey Vernon and Liam Vernon.
About 35 guests were present for the event including many family members and lifelong friends who showered the couple with many gifts and cards expressing best wishes for this milestone in their lives together.
Tommy is retired from Hunter Publishing Company in Winston-Salem, which is now Jostens. He is also retired pastor of St. Paul Church of the Brethren in Cana, Va. Barbara is a housewife/homemaker who enjoys spending time with her family gathered close around her.
Sarah Carson expressed appreciation to the guests for making this such a successful surprise and a very special day.
