Craig Hunter, chairman of the board of county commissioners, said he is looking forward to working with Bates.
“After an intensive search and interview process, Mr. Bates is the unanimous choice of the board. We are confident he will serve the county well.”
Chris Knopf, assistant county manager for economic development and tourism and direct supervisor for the planning department, said he has had good experiences working with Bates.
“I’ve had the privilege to work with Kim on local and regional initiatives over the years and feel that he will be a great asset for our county. Surry and Yadkin counties have followed very similar paths in regards to land use planning and zoning since 2000 which will serve Kim well during his transition. I look forward to working with him.”
Bates said he has many friends in Surry County and is looking forward to working here.
“I think there are a lot of great things happening in Surry and I’m looking forward to being a part of that. I’ve worked in Surry County before, and I’m looking forward to seeing some of my old friends again. It’s great to be coming back. I’ve heard great things about the planning staff there. It’s going to be great working with them,” Bates said.
“I appreciate very much the opportunity to work for Surry County. I hope I can help the community identify and realize its goals in land development, build consensus, make good, workable plans, or any other way I can be of service,” Bates continued.
Bates was born in Columbia, S.C., and moved shortly afterward to Forsyth County where he spent his childhood. He attended Reynolds High School. He is an avid musician and sports lover. He currently resides in East Bend with his wife, Jerrie. Bates plans to relocate to Surry County within the next few months.
