Or at least that is my opinion. When the outside temperature drops into the teens, going outside is just plain miserable. That is, unless there is something outside to look forward to, namely snow.
Meteorologists have been predicting snow sporadically for the past three weeks or so in Mount Airy. With all of the snow predicting, one would think there would have been a few flurries here and a few flurries there. But no, not a single flake flew across my face during that entire three-week period.
Do you know what all of that tells me? Meteorologists are snow teasers. That’s right, I said it. They are snow teases. They urge people to get excited about the prospect of those white flakes falling from the sky and creating an instant winter wonderland. And then what do they do? They snatch those hopes right back, claiming the weather system went a different way or it was stopped by the mountains or a bird flew into the clouds and broke the snow blower. Whatever the reason, they back pedal, claiming there will in fact be no snow — three hours after the first flakes were predicted to fall.
I know there are those of you out there who do not wish for snow. But what I say is, would it really be that bad? Is there so much harm in not having to go to school for a day or going into work late or leaving early. Even for us unfortunates who would have to trudge into work anyway, a little snow would not be so bad. If it’s going to be cold, it might as well snow.
Maybe by writing this column while the clouds are still only threatening instead of producing, I can entice the flakes to show themselves. It would be such a pleasant surprise to wake up Tuesday morning, look out the window and see a white ground staring back at me as is predicted. However, given all of the snow teasing going on in recent weeks, I have only this to say. I’ll believe it when I see it.
