Cox, a graduate of Fruitland Bible Institute, served as pastor of numerous Southern Baptist churches across North Carolina for 45 years until his retirement in 1996. He and his wife, Betty Ann Brown Cox, joined their family in this region of North Carolina where he continued his ministry until his death in August of 2008.
He served for 10 years as chaplain of the Mount Airy Police Department, North Carolina Highway Patrol, Surry County Emergency Medical Services and Surry County Communications/Operations Center. He proudly organized the “Shield A Badge With Prayer” program for Surry County and surrounding counties. He taught classes for Surry Community College and the Highway Patrol in bereavement and death notification. Trooper E.V. Tate, North Carolina Highway Patrol, referred to Cox as a true friend and loyal supporter of the Highway Patrol, a wonderful person who will be sorely missed.
Gray Shelton, retired Major with the Mount Airy Police Department and current chaplain said, “He had a special love and appreciation for all law enforcement and emergency personnel. No matter what badge you wore you could have no better friend than David Cox.”
His years of ministry and volunteerism to the law enforcement community inspired his family to support students enrolled in the Basic Law Enforcement Training or Criminal Justice Technology curriculum with a scholarship in his memory at Surry Community College. Family members are planning a golf event on May 15 to benefit the scholarship.
