While other parts of the state still were dealing with mass power outages and rain and wind damage late Tuesday, Surry County was hit with only minor damage yesterday.

At about 10 p.m. Tuesday, there were a total of 12,753 outages in North Carolina, with the bulk of those reported in Lincoln, Macon, Rowan and Mecklenburg counties, according to Duke Energy’s outage reports.

Locally, John Shelton, Surry County emergency services director, said, “There were surface floods throughout the county in streams, but no reports of agriculture damage, trees fallen on structures or wind damage.”

From about 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., emergency officials responded to more than 13 weather incidents that included fallen trees, a Surry Central Communications dispatcher said.

According to the F.G. Doggett Water Plant, the official weather-recording station for the Mount Airy area, an overnight downpour in the wee hours Tuesday morning 2.67 inches of rain fell. A total of 3.33 inches fell between Monday and late Tuesday with more rain expected in the forecast.
